Flakiness and Thickness Gauge
Standards
BS 812:105.1
The Flakiness (Thickness) gauge is used to determine if the aggregate particles are flaky, defined as having a thickness less than 0.6 of their nominal size. The material to be categorized is divided into seven sieve fractions ranging from 6.3 to 63 mm. The Thickness Gauge is used to determine whether the aggregate particles are flaky, which means they have a thickness less than 0.6 times their nominal size.
The aggregate to be identified is divided into seven sieve fractions ranging from 6.3 to 63 mm, with each fraction evaluated independently. The slot sizes are: 4.9 x 30 mm, 7.2 x 40 mm, 10.2 x 50 mm, 14.4 x 60 mm, 19.7 x 80 mm, 26.3 x 90 mm, and 33.9 x 100 mm.
Flakiness Gauges are used to determine the particle shape of aggregates used in asphalt and concrete paving mixtures, as well as pavement foundation courses. It can also determine the amount of gravel and asphalt material used in pavement seal coatings.
Aggregate particles are manually tested against slots. Aggregates that do not pass are classified as flaky, and their weight percentage in the whole sample is calculated as the flakiness index. The presence of flaky particles is undesirable since it raises the risk of pavement failure under large loads.
