Bulk Density and Voids Measure
Standards
ASTM C29-97, BS 812
Bulk density and voids measures are very essential in construction and concrete industry. The values of bulk density and voids are useful in blending it for concrete, in calculating mass/volume proportions and in specifications when open to purchase of aggregates. They provide a more reliable way of selecting the right aggregates for construction projects to be undertaken.
The term bulk density means mass of aggregate per unit volume. This is a fact because volume deals with the space occupied by the objects of interest as well as the gaps in between them. Bulk density is given in kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³), pounds per cubic foot (lb/ft³) and pounds per cubic inch (lb/in³). The bulk density and voids measure is commonly used in proportioning concretes and load ratios and mass/volume relation in construction material.
While performing the concrete mix proportion, the bulk density and voids measure are essential. In establishing the correct proportions of cement, water and aggregates to use, it helps in establishing the correct number that will allow maximum, bulk density of the mix to guarantee the right strength and durability. Furthermore the bulk density of aggregate is employed in conversion of quantities in purchases contracts and sizing of quantities of materials required for certain projects.
Procedure for Measuring Bulk Density and Voids in Aggregates
To determine the bulk density and voids measure, follow these steps:To determine the bulk density and voids measure, follow these steps:
1. Filling the Measure
- The measuring container should be filled with aggregate to a third of its capacity.
Smooth the surface of the aggregate with your fingers. - Rotate the tamping rod 25times in the aggregate layer to ensure that the force is applied evenly over the surface of the layer.
2. Adding More Aggregate
- Fill the container to two-third full and again check the level to be even.
- Rod the aggregate as done previously.
3. Final Filling
- Fill the container to the top with a rod and layer the layer.
- Make sure that the surface of the aggregate is smoothed out with a straightedge or your fingers.
The projections of larger particles should be in equal proportion to the voids that are below the surface of the top layer.
