The solubility test for bitumen determines the proportion of soluble bitumen in an organic solvent. This test also determines the purity of bitumen.
To conduct the solubility test, bitumen is dissolved in a specified solvent. Finally, the mixture is filtered. After that, the insoluble materials are washed, dried, and weighed. Bitumen solubility is defined as the amount of bitumen that dissolves in a given solvent.
This test can be conducted using a variety of solvents. Carbon disulfide is the most well-known example, although bitumen is also soluble in trichloroethylene. Although the usage of carbon disulfide is becoming increasingly rare due to its severe flammability.
Furthermore, new research have indicated that trichloroethylene might cause cancer and is linked to the depletion of the ozone layer. As a consequence, trichloroethylene can be replaced with a less hazardous solvent. A solubility test on bitumen is one approach to verify its purity.
In road building, it is critical to utilize high-quality bitumen free of impurities. Because bitumen becomes less useful when it includes impurities. Do not have a consistent and stable asphalt made from a bitumen binder that is less than 99% soluble in trichloroethylene. Bitumen products in Infinity Galaxy have a solubility of more than 99% and are highly pure.
