The Constant Head permeability cell is a crucial tool for determining the permeability of granular, gravel, and sand soils. Constructed from a durable acrylic plexiglass body held securely between two anodized aluminum end plates, this device ensures reliable performance in various testing conditions.
The system includes manometer tubes and a stand, featuring three constant-bore tubes with graduated scales, tubing, and connectors for precise measurements. The Constant Head method utilizes a constant level tank made from acrylic plexiglass, designed for wall mounting. This tank allows for adjustable inlet, outlet, and overflow pipes, facilitating optimal water flow during tests.
Constant Head permeability cell range from 2.5 to 9.0 inches (63.5 to 228.6 mm) in diameter, making them suitable for a wide variety of granular soil permeability testing. The clear acrylic sample chamber enables easy observation during the testing process. Each cell features two sidewall manometer ports covered with No. 100 (150µm) brass mesh, preventing material from entering the manometer.
To maintain consistent soil density during tests, a compression spring applies a force of 5 to 10 lbs (2.3 to 4.5 kg) against the top porous stone or perforated plate. The Constant Head permeameter includes necessary tubing, anodized aluminum end caps with valves, and ports for vacuum and water sources. The 6.0 and 9.0 models come equipped with porous plates, while smaller sizes utilize porous stones.
