L Shape Box Apparatus
Standards
EN 12350-10
The L Shape Box Apparatus is utilized for flowability and passing ability tests of self-compacting concrete (SCC). Such an apparatus was specifically designed for the purpose to determine the ability of concrete to pass over the obstacle in a way it would not segregate. One of the most frequently used testing apparatuses is that of construction materials. Self-compacting concrete is fluidous so usually is used where vibration is impossible; flowability counts for proper quality and consistency of materials.
This equipment is typically used in laboratory testing labs to simulate real-world conditions; therefore concrete used for construction will behave exactly as expected on site. With strict standards such as EN 12350-10, the L Shape Box provides accurate measurements that maintain structural integrity during construction.
How the L Shape Box Apparatus Functions
An L Shape Box Apparatus is used in the measurement of the flow and passing ability of self-compacting concrete (SCC). Laboratory apparatus comprises an L-shaped frame fitted with a filling hopper and vertical bars on a spacing similar to that of reinforcement bars in concrete. To begin performing the test, SCC is poured in the vertical section of the apparatus mimicking how concrete flows through tight spaces as one can expect them to be seen in real applications.
Once the mix is prepared, the valve at the bottom of the vertical column is placed open. The concrete starts pouring into the horizontal column. The instrument detects how freely the concrete passes with no or minimum obstruction and the tendency of segregation and blocking tendency taken. The height of the concrete column at both vertical end and horizontal end is taken. Then the concrete passing ratio is computed. The closer to 1 means better flow ability and minimum blockage
It is following EN 12350-10 requirements, therefore serves to determine the possibility of having a SCC fulfill the project's criteria. The process ensures the material shall be adequately suited to be utilized under any conditions, especially for building complicated buildings with sensitive selections of materials to get these buildings made of similar material throughout its composition
Applications of L Shape Box Apparatus
It provides much support in testing materials, especially in evaluating the flow properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) in complex construction projects. It is mainly used for checking the passing ability through the SCC, in which, the ability of the concrete needs to flow around dense reinforcement without any mechanical vibration.
The L Shape Box simulates realistic construction environments in testing SCC such that obstacles like reinforcement bars are successfully maneuvered past without segregation or the formation of voids. This makes its use very critical in the construction of bridges, high-rise buildings or underwater structures where concrete flow and consistency are necessary in the structure
The equipment in the testing laboratory will enable engineers to test different mixes of concrete in order to come up with the best mix for any given application. With the passing ratio of the concrete, professionals can determine whether the SCC mix is suitable for complex, congested construction sites, therefore ensuring that material chosen would ensure that it would provide strength and uniformity across the entire construction process.
