Plate bearing test is very important in determining the load bearing capacity of the soil an essential tool that engineers need to design foundations for structures such as roads, and buildings. This test involves loading a steel plate on the ground and applying pressure to determine the soil bearing capacity of the specific region. Some of the plate bearing accessories utilized in this testing procedure involve jacks, hydraulic pumps, pressure gauges as well as bearing plates.
One of the parameters that are considered in plate bearing testing is the jack capacity. For instance, the product may include jacks in various sizes. Selection of appropriate jack capacity is very important in order to replicate the pressure conditions as in real situation. Lack of proper jack size may also result in wrong identification of the soils and hence it becomes necessary to choose the correct size depending on the task at hand.
Hydraulic pump helps in operating the jack along with the pressure gauge and hydraulic pipe set. The pressure gauge gives live information concerning force that is being applied and this is important when applying pressure during the test in order to get accurate results. The hydraulic pipe essentially ensures that there is constant flow of fluids between the pump and the jack while preventing fluctuations in the vigor with which pressure is applied, which are critical in ensuring that the test is conducted properly.
Bearing plates are laid in a way that they will ensure equal distribution of the load during the test. Another preference for bearing plates is the use of Galvanized steel which has a zinc coated surface to increase their life span and protect them from corrosion common in exposed structures. This helps in maintaining a long lasting end dependable test outcomes. Bearing plates come in various sizes to accommodate different testing requirements, including:
Bearing plates come in various sizes to accommodate different testing requirements, including:
- 12" dia * Thickness 1" (Galvanized)
- 18" dia * Thickness 1" (Galvanized)
- 24" dia * Thickness 1" (Galvanized)
- 30" dia * Thickness 1" (Galvanized)
All sizes perform a certain type of function in relation to the specific type of soil and the load applied and large platens are designed for soft soils only.
Dial gauges are useful in obtaining accuracy of the response of soil to load. With three gauges measuring 30mm with 0.01mm accuracy, they capture even the smallest soil movements. These instruments are essential components of the plate bearing accessories setup.
