Sand Content of Drilling Muds Kit

Standards

ISO 10414-1

The sand content kit is a simple, accurate, and economical sieve analytical tool for detecting the sand content of drilling muds.

Sieve analysis is the standard method for determining sand content due to its high dependability and ease of use. The volume of sand, including the void spaces between grains, is often measured and represented as a percentage of the volume of drilling fluid.

Sand content refers to the volume fraction of particles larger than 74 microns. It is preferable to measure the sand content of drilling fluids on a regular basis. Excessive sand can cause the deposition of a thick filter cake on the borehole wall, which may settle in the hole surrounding the tools when circulation is halted, interfering with the successful functioning of the drilling or casing. High sand content also leads to increased abrasion of pump components and pipe connections.

The kit includes a specific 200-mesh sieve 2.5" in diameter, which is fastened within a collar with a small funnel fitting to either end. This is used with a 10 ml glass measuring tube that is graduated from 0% to 20% sand by volume.

The collar and funnel are constructed of polypropylene, while the screen is made of brass. The set includes a 500 mL wash bottle and a carrying case. Settled sand might present issues while using drilling tools or installing casing. High sand levels might also lead to severe abrasion of pump parts and pipe connections.
