Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Tester

Standards

ASTM C 597

The Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Tester measures the velocity at which ultrasonic pulses propagate through concrete. An electro-acoustic transducer in contact with one surface of the tested concrete generates a pulse of longitudinal vibrations. After crossing a given route length in the concrete, the vibration pulse is transformed into an electrical signal by a second transducer, and the pulse's transit duration is measured using electronic timing circuits.

Provides instructions for evaluating new concrete, hardened concrete, and concrete in buildings. It describes a method for calculating the velocity of propagation of pulses of ultrasonic longitudinal waves in concrete.

The measurement of pulse velocity may be used to determine the consistency of concrete, the existence of cracks or cavities, changes in qualities over time, and the dynamic physical properties.

The Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Tester is a microprocessor-based device that may be linked to a PC via the RS 232 output. It connects to an oscilloscope and measures transit times from 0.1 to 1999.9 μs with a precision of 0.1 μs. The battery-powered equipment has an 800 V transmitter output and a battery life of 18 hours of operation.

The Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Tester is supplied complete with:

  • Two 54 KHz transducers (Transmitter and Receiver) with 3 m cable
  • Calibration rod
  • Coupling agent (250 mm)
  • Carrying case
