Bar Corrosion Detector

Standards

One of the major problems when it comes to construction is corrosion of steel bars that are used in reinforcing concrete. They are over time, moisture and oxygen intruding into the concrete and chloride ions attacking the embedded bars leading to structure failure. That is why using a Bar Corrosion Detector allows for the evaluation of corrosion in its early stages.

Bar corrosion detectors are used in the non-destructive testing (NDT) that helps the engineers to evaluate the efficiency of a particular structure without even having to take apart any part of it. Efficient diagnosis of corrosion can avoid disastrous consequences such as in bridges, buildings and even tunnels so that endangering people’s lives and high cost of maintenance can be prevented.

These devices use methods like the magnetic flux leakage and ultrasonic testing for detection and production of data on the condition of steel reinforcement bars. They enable the engineers to make the right decision on repairs and maintenance thus enabling sustainability of the structures.

How Bar Corrosion Detectors Work

Bar corrosion detectors have been operated using a variety of advanced technologies intended to capture the early signs of corrosion in the reinforcement of steel in concrete structures. The different non-destructive methods are those by which engineers find the potential damage without damaging the material integrity. Some commonly used technologies in the field of bar corrosion detectors include magnetic flux leakage, ultrasonic testing.

MFL Magnetic Flux Leakage

Probably among the most common applications of MFL in corrosion detection is with corrosion detection in concrete through which strong magnetic fields are introduced to the steel bars present in the concrete. In defects and corrosion spots, leaks allow the magnetic field to leak into these defect sites creating the signal that is detectable. In corrosion detection, it highlights the presence of corrosion as well as the extent. MFL often attracts engineers since it scans large areas quickly and efficiently.

Ultrasonic Testing

Ultrasonic testing utilizes high-frequency sound waves, scanning the material to detect changes in material properties. In bar corrosion detectors, ultrasonic waves will travel through the concrete and reflect off it: any change in the returned signal could be corrosion or some other defects in steel bars. Such a technique gives close data about the thickness of the steel and reveals corrosion that hasn't yet caused significant damage on the surface.
